It is a grave mistake to consider yeast infection as a disease only for adults. Recent studies on yeast infections have shown that even children are subject to possibility of contracting thrush or yeast infections; although this possibility is quite lower than that of women. Infants, tots and children under the age of 14 are commonly found to be suffering from yeast infections.

Causes of Yeast Infection in Children

Laundry articles such as harsh soaps, dyes, perfumes, shampoos etc. cause damage to the delicate skin of infants and toddlers and causes yeast infection. Tight clothing and diapers lead to insufficient air circulation to the private parts of children which are usually moist due to frequent toilet. An untreated diaper rash often leads to yeast infection in children.

Children subject to day care environment get a higher course of antibiotics which disturbs their intestinal balance and leads to yeast infection. A child’s aimless scratching and irritation of the delicate skin around the genitals also lead to yeast infection.

The use of corticosteroid for asthma or frequent use of ibuprofen for other maladies is found quite common among children. These medicines and drugs boost growth of yeast in children. Their use is usually monitored for above reasons. Apparently, a child suffering from diabetes or HIV is quite vulnerable to yeast infection because of their low immunity.

One of the most common ways of contracting yeast infection is through one of the infected parents. An infant comes in direct contact with its mother in a numerous ways which increases the chances of the baby getting yeast infection manifold if she is suffering from thrush or candidasis. If the mother is suffering from infection while the baby’s birth, then it is probable that the baby contracts infection from her.

Symptoms of Yeast Infection in Children

In case of oral yeast infection, white or cream colored plaques can be found inside the baby’s mouth. Red cracks can be seen on the corners of mouth and on the lips of kid. The child complains of pain or burning sensation in mouth. In skin yeast infection, children get blisters and ulcers on their skin.

In case of genital yeast infection, children show similar symptoms as adults. Female babies get redness, blisters, itching, burning on their genitals and have a curd like discharge and give yeast like odor. Boys exhibit red, inflammable patches around the head of penis.

Treatment and Prevention

Drugs and medicines are available for treatment of yeast infection in children but they are not usually recommended as they can cause serious side effects to the baby’s health. Do not try to treat the infection in your children with the medications for adults.

Change the diapers of your baby frequently and keep the baby clean and dry. Wash linens and toys of your baby properly and often. Do not let your children come in contact with a yeast infected child. Ensure that the laundry items you use for your baby are mild and do not contain any harmful chemicals.

Apply anti-fungal cream or ointment to the affected part with a cotton swab carefully. Throw away the swab carefully and see to it that the ointment container no way comes in contact with yeast affected part of your baby.
