Different Types of Yeast Infections and Their Symptoms

Yeast infections are a common ailment which occurs due to a certain Candida fungus. This infection is quite common in women. According to a survey, 70% of women suffer yeast infection at least once in their entire lifespan while 40% women suffer yeast infection more than once.

Yeast infection can manifest itself in various different parts or regions of the body. Here are different types of yeast infections commonly found:

Oral Yeast Infection

The Monilia Albicans fungus causes oral yeast infection or oral thrush as said formally. This fungus attacks the mouth and throat tissue of the body and cause white patches in the mouth. These patches can be seen inside the cheek, the roof of mouth, the tongue, and the gums and at times even on lips. The wiping of these patches causes bleeding and ulcers develop on those spots.

If this infection reaches the esophagus, it is called esophageal thrush. This thrush makes it difficult to swallow food or drink water. These oral infections occur in women because of intake of contraceptive pills. Oral yeast infections can also be caused by tricyclic antidepressants.

Skin Yeast Infection

In skin yeast infection, rashes, itches and blisters can be observed on the skin. Yeasts flourish in damp areas like underarms, groin, under the breasts, under buttock folds, between fingernails etc. Cuts and sores can also be due to yeast infection.

Vaginal Yeast Infection

Vaginal yeast infection is the most common type of yeast infection seen. This infection causes itching and burning in vagina and in surrounding parts. A white or yellowish discharge from vagina is the common symptom of vaginal thrush. The general cause of vaginal yeast infection is Monilial vaginitis or Candidiasis.

The damp environs of vagina makes women more vulnerable to genital yeast infection. Imbalance in yeast to bacteria ratio due to changes in acidity during pregnancy triggers the increased growth of yeast eventually ending up in yeast infection. This infection causes no serious problem during the delivery but causes a lot of anxiety and discomfort in gestation period. Also factors like diabetes, menstrual cycles, hormonal changes, birth control pills, unprotected sex with infected person cause vaginal yeast infection.

Penile Yeast infection

Penile yeast infection in men is not as common as vaginal yeast infection in women. The symptoms of penile yeast infection are less conspicuous because of the external sexual anatomy. This condition is generally detected when the infection leads to some other serious diseased state.

The most common reason for penile yeast infection is unprotected sex with a yeast infected partner. Wrong eating habits like high sugar and caffeine in diet and consumption of alcohol, especially beer, are also chief factors of penile yeast infection. Prolonged intake of antibiotics has also been reported to be harmful in such cases.
